VPN Requirements
Here are some best practices for using a virtual private network (VPN):
- Use a reputable VPN service: It's important to use a reputable VPN service to ensure that your online activity is secure and your personal data is protected. Look for a VPN service that has a good track record, a clear privacy policy, and strong encryption protocols.
- Enable the VPN when using public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured, which means that your data could be vulnerable to being intercepted by hackers. To protect your data, it's a good idea to use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi.
- Use the VPN to access blocked content: Some websites and services may be blocked in certain countries or regions. A VPN can help you access these websites by routing your internet traffic through a server in a different location.
- Keep your VPN software up to date: Make sure to keep your VPN software up to date to ensure that you have the latest security and performance improvements.
- Use the VPN on all of your devices: If you have multiple devices that you use to access the internet, it's a good idea to use a VPN on all of them to ensure that your online activity is secure.
- Be cautious when using a free VPN: While free VPNs may be tempting, they may not offer the same level of security and privacy as a paid VPN service. Additionally, some free VPNs have been known to collect and sell user data. It's generally a good idea to avoid using free VPNs and opt for a reputable paid service instead.

We recommend that all full-time staff of The Linux Foundation install and use a VPN solution from a trusted provider on all devices they use for work. Please use this linux.com article for why this is deemed necessary:
In short, the reasons are as follows:
- We assume that the Wi-Fi link is not secure
- We assume that the Wi-Fi router is compromised
- We assume that the above is especially the case at public locations like libraries or cafes
Instead of attempting to secure every employee's home router, we prefer to secure the traffic passing through them instead.
Which devices should have VPN
All devices you use for accessing work resources should have a VPN application installed and running at all times, especially when using Wi-Fi. These include:
- Your laptop or workstation
- The mobile phone you use for work
- Any additional mobile devices that you use to access work resources
It is not sufficient to install VPN on your home router, as we are trying to secure the Wi-Fi link itself, therefore the VPN application should be installed directly on each mobile device itself.
Which VPN provider should you use?

Expensing VPN services
You can expense your VPN license by forwarding the receipt to expensify. If you purchased a license for more than 3 devices, you can expense up to $50 USD.
If you are using another VPN service, you can expense up to $50 USD annually, unless your direct manager approves a higher amount for a legitimate reason.
